Combining Art Project

First Step:
Student in this course created individual pieces of work prior to class, then worked in groups to combine their art into one group piece.

Second Step:
Digital representations of this work were then posted on this blog for other groups to retrieve and manipulate using video as medium.

Third Step:
The students created the videos which were uploaded to the blog as well.

Purpose:
Students will see how their individual and group work was easily manipulated and combined through the use of digital technologies. This exercise allows students to experience what many artists are feeling when their work is manipulated without their consent or knowledge.

This presents questions of ownership:

Who owns the work?
-Is it considered something new that can be claimed by the manipulator?

-What impact does this have on the artist of the original work, who may not agree with the new representation of their artwork?

-How accountable should the manipulater be in assigning credit to original artists' work or for obtaining permission to reuse/manipulate the piece?

    Movies Unreeled did a nice job of using effects to alter the appearance of the images, which may or not meet the approval of the original artist.

    I don't get that. If an artist creates something, you take that something and you change the appearance it's no longer the original work so therefore what claim does the artist have? I know the original is what started the whole thing but when does something you buy, change, etc; actually become you work. I said this before..I buy a newspaper with photos in it, I take one of the photos scan it into my PC tweak it with photo shop black out a tooth here and there is it my photo now or still property of the Newspaper?

    Movies unreeled I liked how you change the color of each art peice.It helps to change the idea of each peice and look at it is a differnet way. I feel that you should be able to take others art and change it as long as it doesn't look like the original art.

    I thought this group did a very nice job taking all the other groups collaborating of art and "tweaking" It If you will. It's nice to see what other people can do with the same art piece. Job well done.
